Gas Storm
Readiness Checklist.

Hurricane season can test more than your roof, windows, and generator. It can also test your propane or natural gas system. Use this interactive checklist before, during, and after a storm to help protect your home, business, family, and property.

Your progress is saved automatically in your browser. You can come back any time and pick up where you left off, or print and email a copy.

If You Smell Gas

Leave the area immediately. Avoid flames, sparks, switches, and electrical devices. Do not attempt to relight appliances. Call emergency services, your gas supplier, or a licensed gas professional. Do not return until the area has been cleared as safe.

01

Know Where Your Shutoffs Are

Before a storm arrives, make sure you know where every gas shutoff is located. Do not wait until an emergency to figure this out.

Guardian Tip Take a photo of each shutoff location and save it in your phone under "Gas Shutoffs". Future-you will thank present-you.
02

Check Your Tank or Meter Area

Walk around the tank or meter area and look for anything that could become a problem during high wind, flooding, or debris impact.

Flood Zones In flood-prone areas, large propane tanks may need to be properly anchored to reduce the risk of dangerous movement during flooding. Have your licensed gas installer determine whether anchoring is needed.
03

Make Sure Your Generator Gas Supply Is Sized Right

A standby generator is only as reliable as the gas system feeding it. Before hurricane season, confirm the math works.

Common Mistake Buying a generator without confirming whether the gas system can actually feed it under load. That creates false confidence right when you need reliability most. Use our BTU calculator to start sizing.
04

Protect Against Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is one of the biggest post-storm dangers. Never use any of the following indoors or in attached spaces.

Never Use Indoors

Portable generators, charcoal grills, camp stoves, and gas ovens or stovetops used as heaters all produce carbon monoxide. Use generators, camp stoves, and charcoal grills outdoors only, at least 20 feet away from windows. Never use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home.

If An Alarm Sounds Move immediately to fresh air outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone is accounted for before re-entering.
05

Prepare Your Gas Appliances

Before the storm, identify which appliances are connected to propane or natural gas. Inventory yours below.

After Flooding Do not relight or restart appliances after flooding, impact damage, or suspected gas leaks until the system has been checked by a qualified professional.
06

After the Storm

After severe weather, inspect from a safe distance. Check off what you've confirmed is OK. If anything below is wrong, do not attempt to relight or repair it yourself.

If You Smell Gas Or Suspect A Leak

Leave the area immediately. Avoid flames, sparks, switches, and electrical devices. Do not attempt to relight appliances. Call emergency services, your gas supplier, or a licensed gas professional. Do not return until the area has been cleared as safe. If it is safe to do so, many propane safety resources advise turning off the main propane supply valve at the tank during a suspected leak. Do not put yourself in danger to do this.
